Congratulations to our first year girls basketball team who made it to the quarter finals of their league this year. The team have put in a tremendous performance throughout the year, winning the majority of their matches but were sadly beaten on the day by Larkin CC. Team: Emma Onesime, Loretta Ehimen, Anne Chiru, Lauren O Neill, Nicole Farrelly, Hannah Howard, Ximena Peniche, Wiktoria Ogrodzka, Natalia Kaldunek and Jade Cox Franey. We look forward to doing even better next year!


Congratulations to Jamie Finn 6th who was presented with the FAI Under 16 Women’s International Player of the year on Sunday. The award was televised on RTE 2. Jamie is pictured below receiving her award from Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given. Well done Jamie!

Congratulations also to Jordyn McGuire , 5th year, who came first in Ireland in the Mathletes challenge (an online Maths tournament) in his year group. Overall St. Finian’s C.C. came second in Ireland for the month of February. Many thanks to all the Maths teachers who encouraged students to take part in this challenge.
All first year students recently took part in the IMTA National Maths quiz, results were calculated and we are waiting to hear back on who progresses to the finals! Best of luck to all involved.
Festival of Music
Students from St. Finian’s C.C took part in the Festival of Music in the National Concert Hall on 9th March. Congratulations to Liam Cunningham who performed a piano solo. Thanks to Ms Orla Magee for all her work in preparing students for this event.
On Thursday 12th March the Garda Band was in St. Finian’s CC for presentation of two classes of 5th students with certificates for completing the TAG programme (Teenager and Garda Programme). Certificates were presented by Superintendent Noel Carolan of Balbriggan The programme ran over six weeks and involved the facilitation of discussions between Teenagers and Gardaí on topics selected by the young people prior to the programme. The programme also involved a visit to the local Garda Station. Feedback from students who participated in it has been extremely positive.
A very successful school tour took place to Berlin during the February mid-term break 13th – 16th Febraury . Thank you to Mr. Carbury for organising it and to Ms McKittrick, Mr. Young, Ms Magee, Ms. Egan for accompanying the students on the trip. Fifth year students spent three days from 13th -15th March on Achill Island improving their Irish while also engaging in waterspouts. Both students and teachers found the experience very positive and worthwhile. Thanks to Ms Morris and Mr. Carbury for organising the trip and all the teachers who joined made their own way to Achill to join the students for the weekend.
Visit by Austrian students
St. Finian’s C.C was delighted to welcome forty students from Salzburg in Austria who are in Ireland between March 23rd and March 26th on a cultural and educational exchange. They were broken up into two groups, each group attending school for one and a half days. They were paired up with 5th year students and attended classes with them. They have also been working with the German teacher, Ms. Magee, by pairing up with our German students for oral language workshops. So far very positive feedback has been received from both the Austrian students and their teachers and staff and students of St. Finian’s C.C
St Finian’s Community College was honoured to be chosen as one of 200 schools to attend the Thomas F Meagher Flag Presentation at a ceremony held in Waterford on Thursday 12th March with Michael D Higgins as honoured guest. Four fifth year students pictured below, David Wright, Ruth Sherlock, Bronwyn Lee and Orla Hand, attended with their Principal Patricia Knightly.
In March 2016 the Foundation will stage ‘Flag Day’ – which will present schools and local communities the opportunity to fundraise for charity and worthy causes.The Flag will be flown during the 2016 flag week, which will take place from the10th – 17th March 2016
All secondary schools in the country will eventually be presented with a new National Flag by the Thomas F. Meagher Foundation in honour of the great Irish Patriot, US Army General and Governor of Montana who flew the first Tricolour Flag on the 7th March 1848 from 33, The Mall, Waterford and the Foundation will run an ‘Awards and scholarship Programme’ for students.
David Wright was chosen on behalf of the school to receive the flag. Ruth Sherlock also received tickets for the Ireland v Poland match presented by the FAI”.

3rd and 6th year supervised study is continuing right up to the end of term
English conversation classes for parents:
Every Tuesday, resuming Tuesday 14th April, English conversation classes for parents who wish to improve their English from 9.30 to 10.45am. Contact Eileen Foley for details.
All 3rd and 6th years have been issued with a copy of the schedule of important examination dates over the forthcoming months along with the timetable for the written exams. These can also be viewed at www.examinations.ie Parents should take time to familiarise themselves with these.
Of particular importance in April and May are the dates for Orals, Practicals and the deadlines for submitting coursework and projectwork.
Students must attend these exams on the day and time allocated to them by their teacher. Note that if a student fails to attend their oral or practical exams then they forfeit a significant percentage of their final grade in that subject.
