Maths – Higher, Ordinary and Foundation
English – Higher and Ordinary
French/German – Higher and Ordinary
NOTE: Students who did not take Irish at Junior Cert Level will do Geography in the Leaving Cert instead.
Students will then pick 3 other Optional Subjects from the following
History, Biology, Business, Construction Studies, Geography, Physics, Economics, D.C.G, Chemistry, Accounting, Technology, Music, Art, Home Economics.
College Entry Requirements
All colleges set down minimum requirements sometimes called matriculation requirements, for entry to their courses. These normally include passing certain subjects and achieving specific grades. In most cases these specify requirements in English and Mathematics. However, in addition, all constituent and recognised colleges of the National Universities of Ireland (U.C.C., U.C.D., U.C.G., Maynooth, Royal College of Surgeons) require almost all applicants to have passed Irish and a further language from their matriculation programme. There are exceptions but these are few e.g. for those born outside Ireland or students applying to the National College of Art and Design may now present Art instead of the third language or for Engineering at Maynooth a third language is not required. A third language is not required for Nursing. Some Science courses in U.C.D. do not require a third language. I.T.’s do not require a third language unless one is going to study it a third level.
Specific Course Requirements
In addition to minimum entry requirements college faculties and courses require specific grades in subjects that they feel most relevant to their particular course e.g. honours maths for some engineering courses.
Where demand exceeds the number of places on a course, most Colleges operate a points system.

One sitting only of the Leaving Certificate Examination will be counted for points purpose.
In the case of certain subjects, e.g. Home Economics (General), Foundation Level Mathematics or Foundation Level Irish, some HEI’s may not award the points shown above. If in any doubt, check with the Admissions Office of the appropriate HEI’s.
