Concern 24 Hour Fast 2014

concern_fast
Since Christmas is a time for giving back, and it’s fast approaching, the 5th and 6th year Deans decided to take part in the Concern Fast 2014.

Contrary to the name, the Concert Fast was anything but ‘fast’. As we abstained from food for 24 hours, the day seemed far longer than it ever has before. The 27th of November seemed never ending and tedious as everybody around us indulged in their lunches and dinners while we put ourselves in the shoes of the hungry. The experience has provided me with great insight into the everyday struggles that those in developing countries face. It is horrifying, to say the least.

The fast began at 8:30am and the apprehension from those taking part was obvious. We knew it would be beyond difficult but we also knew that the sense of accomplishment would be highly satisfactory. The student Deans and Ms. Derivan gorged themselves with their last supper (or last breakfast, in this case) with an abundance of cereal and toast. Then we set out on our mission, it seemed like an impossible mission.

I won’t sugar coat it for you, it was a challenging experience for all. Trying to concentrate on our studies became almost insurmountable but we battled through and endured the day. Meal times were the hardest for me because as images of those eating engulfed my sight, my tummy could only grumble in response. The mouth-watering scents wafted through my nostrils and my self-restraint deserved reward.

The trouble I had lasting a mere 24 hours without food really had me thinking. If I found 24 hours that difficult how do those in third world countries do it on the daily? There is a shocking economic gap between the people of Ireland and the people of developing world countries. It is through this experience that my perspective has been changed and moulded. It is impertinent that we appreciate what we have but I now think that giving back is also essential.

One man’s waste is another man’s treasure.

Shauna Bowers, 6th Year

A note from Ms. Derivan:

A huge congratulations and well done to everyone who took part. It was a massive challenge but we raised €885 for Concern Worldwide. Well done everybody and thank you to everyone who supported us!
